SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOP TO ASSESS FLOOD SITUATION AND PROPOSE SOLUTIONS TO COPE WITH FLOODS IN TAM KY CITY

On Nov. 11th, University of Science and Technology (DUT) – The University of Danang in collaboration with Department of Science and Technology, Quang Nam province has held a scientific workshop to assess situation and propose solutions to respond to floods in Tam Ky city in the context of flooding, urbanization, and climate change. Rector of DUT, Assoc. Prof. Doan Quang Vinh co-chaired with Chairman of Quangnam Provincial People's Committee Le Tri Thanh. Also attending were Vice Chairman of Quangnam Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Hong Quang, representatives of People's Committee of Tam Ky city, Nui Thanh, Thang Binh, Phu Ninh districts and functional sectors.

Rector of DUT, Assoc. Prof. Doan Quang Vinh chaired the workshop.

This is a mid-term workshop in a provincial level science and technology project. Reporting at the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Chi Cong, project leader, said that through research, it was determined that the cause of Tam Ky flooding was due to extreme heavy rain, water in the inner city could not flow out, the outside water from the west and north pour in a lot. Meanwhile, the existing urban drainage system is poor…

Assoc. Nguyen Chi Cong - the project leader presented the topic after 1 year of research.

From there, the research team decided to assess the overall flood situation in the entire Tam Ky, Thang Binh, Phu Ninh, and Nui Thanh basins to propose a flood reduction plan. The main idea is to return space for rivers, build more green infrastructure to divide floods to other storage areas or basins.

After listening to the opinions of many experts, scientists, representatives of the authorities, concluding the workshop, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Tri Thanh shared that this workshop has clarified many issues and provided new useful information. Mr. Thanh suggested the project manager continue to research, collect additional information, additional data, and do it quickly for final assessment. At the same time, he proposed the direction of expanding the topic, flooding the eastern region and emphasizing: "The most basic solution is to divide the flood from Ban Thach river to Truong Giang river, which needs to be studied very carefully, integrating the project of dredging the Truong Giang river and Cua Lo channel, assess the impact of water level, environment, propose scenarios to ensure river ecology, coastline, impacts of spillway construction. Cutting floods from the north and west also needs to be clarified, calculating how much water flow can be solved. In case of adding Phu Ninh lake to discharge flood, how will the downstream impact be studied."
